A couple of years ago, I got a tattoo on my arm of a semicolon with these words following it: Your Story Isn’t Over Yet.

I got this tattoo because for most of my life, I have suffered from clinical depression. It went undiagnosed for a long time. After coming to grips with it a few years ago, I learned that I needed the constant reminder that there is always hope and that my life always has more chapters waiting to be written. Without this reminder and without my faith, I am prone to dark and somber thoughts, even thinking that my life has no meaning and that it would be better to end it.

The semicolon became one of those many reminders. It hurt to get the ink and artwork but every time I look at my arm, I now have a visual reminder of how valuable my life and health are.

Recently, a project has gone viral : Project Semicolon. It is based on the concept that the semicolon can be used as a symbol of hope for those that suffer from mental illness because of the semicolons meaning. The organization promotes mental health awareness and advocacy and does so by granting hope to those who need it.

Their definition of the semicolon is this:

The semicolon is a place in a sentence where an author could have ended their thought but chose not to.

A mental health diagnosis doesn’t have to be the end of the world. It doesn’t have to define an individuals life. We can choose something different to do with our lives with help of professionals and people who love us; we can positively choose to continue our thought.

Constant reminders of hope, healing and the availability of a prosperous life are needed by everyone. People who may feel lost in their emotions, their disabilities and in a darkness that won’t seem to lift need them even more.
